Woody Hughes
for State Representative

House District 78
Bethel, Byron, Hanover, Milton Township, Roxbury, Rumford

“We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike.”

— Dr. Maya Angelou

Woody first came to Maine as a student at Gould Academy. The school helped give him his profound appreciation for the natural environment of the mountains, lakes, and rivers in western Maine. It also introduced him to what would become his life’s career in pottery. It launched him into the art schools which provided him with the skills to open and maintain a working studio since 1980. Along with his studio work, Woody taught for over 25 years at the college level and instructional workshops across the nation and around the world.

Hughes believes that opportunities create strength and growth in communities: in education, job markets, housing and health care affordability. Increased funding from state programs is needed to support our public schools, community colleges, vocational training centers for training and retraining during these challenging times.

Woody came full circle and finished his last nine years of his teaching career at Gould Academy in Bethel, where he still resides with his wife, Lee Hughes. They bought and ran the Mill Hill Inn for seven years.

Woody also believes in the opportunity to be stewards of this place we call home and feels this focus alone creates a commonality of the pride we feel for our Maine way of life.
